addressed in the information and education program. <br /> Currently, cloth diapers from diaper delivery companies are <br /> reducing the use of disposable diapers in the jurisdiction <br /> by 60.2 tons annually. <br /> Agricultural source reduction practices include a <br /> number of strategies. The numerous fruit and vegetable <br /> stands in the unincorporated area generate considerable <br /> quantities of food wastes daily. Some of this material <br /> goes to area landfills, but a telephone survey of many of <br /> the twenty-one identified stands and grocery stores <br /> revealed that in most cases the trimmings and left-over <br /> produce are fed to animals owned by the business or by <br /> others in the area who pick it up regularly for their <br /> animals. It is estimated from the survey that this reduces <br /> the County wastes going to landfills by at least 40 tons <br /> per year. <br /> The wineries, food-packing companies, and other <br /> businesses in the area utilize hundreds of wood pallets to <br /> ship their products. Many of these end up in the landfills <br /> when they are broken, but some firms repair pallets in- <br /> house or through repair businesses and re-use them, saving <br /> wood and landfill space. A telephone survey indicated that <br /> this source reduction practice is responsible for reducing <br /> wastes landfilled by 400 tons per year. <br /> In the short-term planning period there will be <br /> additional surveys done of businesses in the unincorporated <br /> area to discover what other source reduction activities are <br /> being utilized. <br /> B.
