addressed in the information and education program.
Currently, cloth diapers from diaper delivery companies are
reducing the use of disposable diapers in the jurisdiction
by 60.2 tons annually.
Agricultural source reduction practices include a
number of strategies. The numerous fruit and vegetable
stands in the unincorporated area generate considerable
quantities of food wastes daily. Some of this material
goes to area landfills, but a telephone survey of many of
the twenty-one identified stands and grocery stores
revealed that in most cases the trimmings and left-over
produce are fed to animals owned by the business or by
others in the area who pick it up regularly for their
animals. It is estimated from the survey that this reduces
the County wastes going to landfills by at least 40 tons
per year.
The wineries, food-packing companies, and other
businesses in the area utilize hundreds of wood pallets to
ship their products. Many of these end up in the landfills
when they are broken, but some firms repair pallets in-
house or through repair businesses and re-use them, saving
wood and landfill space. A telephone survey indicated that
this source reduction practice is responsible for reducing
wastes landfilled by 400 tons per year.
In the short-term planning period there will be
additional surveys done of businesses in the unincorporated
area to discover what other source reduction activities are
being utilized.
B. Quantity of Waste Being Source Reduced:
AB 939 guidelines require an estimation of the waste
quantities currently being diverted through source
reduction activities.
Chapter 3 - Source Reduction 6
