plastic bags through some grocery store chains and dry
cleaners. However, all plastic resins are recyclable,
and plastics recycling is very new. As plastics
processing facilities become available in the area, other
plastics will be accepted by recycling centers and
curbside collection programs for recycling.
E. Glass:
At this time, 25% of the glass in the County's waste
stream is being recycled. Much of that is attributable to
the State's beverage container redemption program. Almost
20% of the glass in the waste stream is not currently
recyclable, because it consists of light bulbs, plate
glass, pyrex, and mirrored glass, but there is potential
for additional diversion of recyclable glass.
Glass is made from non-renewable but very plentiful
and inexpensive raw materials, however glass should be
recycled since it requires more non-renewable resources
to make virgin glass than to recycle existing glass into
new bottles or other products.
California redemption and other recyclable glass is
collected by most recycling programs now. There is a
major glass manufacturing facility in the County, so the
challenge for glass recycling in the County may not be
the availability of markets but developing programs that
improve the quality of the diverted material. Even small
amounts of contaminants like ceramic or pyrex material
can cause major problems in glass furnaces and production
equipment. Color sorting of the flint, green and amber
glass is also important, since only limited quantities of
mixed color cullet can be tolerated in the production of
flint or colored glass.
There are regulatory impediments to using glass for
Chapter 4 - Recycling 6
