U
Once sufficient material is accumulated at the yard waste processing area, the material is ground
by a barrel grinder or similar equipment. Grinding occurs during the hours during which the
landfill gates are open to receive refuse.
After grinding, the material is passed through a trammel screen to separate the small particles
from the larger material. These two materials are removed within 72 hours from the NCRC&SL
and sent to markets. At this time, the sale of these materials is under the control of the yard
waste processing contractor.
The County will not add water or take other measures to enhance the biological activity
(composting) within the processed yard waste without LEA approval.
Additional equipment may be used as needed, and the equipment identified below may not be
used if not needed.
• Front end loader
• Wood grinder
• Trommel screen
• Transfer tractors/trailers — Transport material from site to markets
• Tractor or Bulldozer — Spread/consolidated material
8.3 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
• Only qualified trained personnel work in the yard waste processing area.
• Safety equipment for Personnel working in the yard waste processing area include highly
visible safety vests, safety glasses, hard hats, gloves, and proper footwear.
• Mobile equipment will be equipped with an audible back up alarm and working lights.
North County RC&SL Page 65 of 69 Public Works/Solid Waste
Joint Technical Document County of San Joaquin — February 10, 2010
