Leachate was sampled(collection point L-1, L-3, and L-4) in the second semester of 2013 (Table 6).
The next Leachate sampling event is scheduled for the first semester of 2014 and will be included in the
first semester 2014 report.
Twenty Nine different VOCs were reported in the second semester 2013 leachate sample. The highest
VOC concentrations reported were the Xylenes, MtBE, TBA,Acetone, the benzene compounds, and
Toluene. Results are consistent with past leachate monitoring events. Presence of VOCs in the leachate
do not indicate groundwater contamination, but rather indicate the success of the liners at North County
Landfill in preventing groundwater contamination.
Secondary Sump Monitoring
The liquid level in the secondary sumps of Area 3 and 4 are monitored quarterly.
No liquid was found in either secondary sump since monitoring began in July 2010. This lack of liquid
indicates that the primary liner is not leaking.
Area 1 is not provided with a secondary sump.
ANNUAL SUMMARY
MONITORING
Groundwater
General Water Quality Parameters
G-1 (Up-gradient):
The concentration limits for Sodium was slightly exceeded in background well G-1 during the 1St
semester 2013 sampling event. The concentration limits for calcium and EC were slightly exceeded in
background well G-1 during the 2nd Semester 2013 sampling event. Because G-1 has historically been
hydraulically up gradient of the landfill, the increased levels of these constituents during the 1St and 2nd
Semester 2013 could be due to regional changes in water quality that are unrelated to site activities. All
other concentrations of parameters were less than the tolerance limits.
G-2 is no longer useable, has been replaced by G-2A, and will no longer be reported.
G-2A(Down-gradient):
All concentrations of field and monitoring parameters were below established concentration limits in
G-2A during the 2nd semesters 2013 with the exception of turbidity which slightly exceeded the
concentration limit during the 2nd Semester 2013.
G-3D (Down-gradient):
All concentrations of field and monitoring parameters were below established concentration limits in
G-31) during the 1st and 2nd semesters 2013.
North County RC&SL Public Works/Solid Waste
2nd Semester and Annual 2013 Groundwater Monitoring 10 County of San Joaquin—January 25,2014
