0
PHASE 2 INVESTIGATION OF EXTENT OF CLOSURE CAP
AND HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
CORRAL HOLLOW SANITARY LANDFILL
PURPOSE
The purpose of Phase 2 investigation is to determine where closure cap must be extended to ensure
that all refuse along the eastern side of the Corral Hollow Landfill is beneath closure cap. Phase 2
investigation will also confirm the results of the Phase 1 investigation with regards to the apparent
lack of refuse east of the access road on the east side of the landfill. The extent of refuse and
closure cap will define the areas over which the closure cap will be extended.
BACKGROUND
Phase 1 investigation was conducted on September 2005 to investigate whether refuse and/or
closure cap was present beneath the drainage ditch on the eastern side of the Corral Hollow
Landfill. Five excavations were dug on both sides of the access road (Figures 1 and 2). The
excavations east of the access road (away from the landfill)were dug between 8 feet and 12 feet
deep, with the exception of Excavation No. 1 which was dug to four feet. The excavations west of
the access road (toward the landfill)were dug to a depth between 6 and 14 feet.
No refuse was found east of the access road; however, refuse was found beneath the drainage ditch
where no closure cap was present. At the excavations where refuse was found, the soil cover was
not more than 2.5 feet deep.
PHASE 2 INVESTIGATION AREA
In this Phase 2 investigation, additional areas along the eastern portion of the landfill will be
excavated to determine the horizontal extent of the closure barrier and refuse if the refuse extends
beyond the closure cap. The lack of refuse east of the access road, as determined in Phase 1
investigation, will also be confirmed.
The areas that will be investigated for the extent of refuse in Phase 2 are (Figure 2):
1. North-eastern corner, extending west from the access road and excavation No 1.
2. South-western corner of the eastern side of the landfill. Excavations will extend both
south-east and south-west, north of the retention pond.
3. Eastern edge of the access road. Trenches will be dug every 100 feet along the eastern side
of the access road.
4. Phase 1 Excavation No 1 near the north-western corner of the road will be re-excavated to
a depth of 12 feet as requested by Water Board staff.
Phase 2 Investigation Solid Waste/Public Works
Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill Page 1 of 5 San Joaquin County—January 12,2006
