In the past, the County has reported
evidence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) in monitoring
well 4 (MW-4) . The VOC's typically detected include
tetrachloroethene and dichlorodifluoromethane, but these
compounds were not detected in the second quarter 1997
monitoring event. However, Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene were
detected in the second quarter of 1997 for MW-4 . This letter
is to inform the Board of these new detections. Since these
compounds have never been detected in the wells at the Harney
Lane Sanitary Landfill, the County has hired a separate
consultant (EMCON) to perform a discrete retest of MW-4 . The
sample will be analyzed using EPA methods 601 and 602 in
accordance with Waste Discharge Requirement Order 196-139 .
The results of the retest should be available in
approximately two weeks. The normal quarterly monitoring
report for the Harney Lane Sanitary Landfill is due to the
Board by July 15, 1997. We request an extension of this
deadline to facilitate receipt of the retest results. The
quarterly report, including the results of the retest, will
