File No. 20-1008-49
April 6, 1994
APPENDIX
On March 4, 1994, an engineer from our office observed the excavation of six test pits at the
Harney Lane Landfill in San Joaquin Co., California. The test pits were excavated by county
personnel with a John Deere 310D backhoe equipped with a 24-inch bucket. The depth of the
test pits was 5 feet from existing ground surface. Soils excavated were consistantly observed
to be a brown silty sand (SM). The locations of the test pits are shown on Plate A-1.
Disturbed bulk samples were acquired from the test pits, sealed, and returned to our Stockton
office for laboratory testing. Tests performed included permeability, field capacity, moisture
content, specific gravity, gradation, and porosity. Porosity, specific gravity, field capacity, and
permeability tests were performed on samples remolded to 90 percent relative compaction based
on a maximum dry density of 128.8 pound per cubic foot obtained during testing of similar
native silty sand (SM) materials placed on the test pad foundation layer. A copy of the
permeability results is attached and a table summarizing the laboratory results is presented
below.
Test Sample TP #1 Sample TP #3 Sample TP #4 Sample TP #5 Sample TP #6
Permeability
(cm/sec) 1.6x10' 1.1x10`
Field Capacity
(vol/vol) 0.164 0.2
Moisture Con-
tent (vol/vol) 0.14 0.20
Specific Gravity 2.65 2.66
Sieve
(% passing 200) 44 40 34 36 46
Max Dry Densi-
ty
(90% Comp.) 128.8
PCF
Porosity 0.33 0.33
Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder, Inc.
