KLEINFELDER
6 CONSTRUCTION
6.1 TEST PAD
The test pad was constructed in April, 1993. Results of the test pad and construction methods
are presented in Appendix D.
6.2 CONSTRUCTION OF THE FINAL COVER
6.2.1 Foundation Layer
The foundation layer fill shall be on or off site materials meeting the requirements of Chapter
15, and shall be placed in lifts not exceeding 8 inches in loose depth. The completed
foundation layer shall be not less than 2-feet thick. Compaction of the lower foot shall be to
the maximum practical based on optimum moisture content. The upper foot of the foundation
layer shall be compacted to at least 90 percent of minimum dry density as defined by ASTM
D 1557. Where the lower one foot of the foundation layer is already in place as temporary
cover, it may be compacted in place to the maximum practical density.
6.2.2 Barrier Layer
The low permeability barrier layer shall be constructed on a foundation layer that has been
compacted to provide a uniform firm surface. The low permeability barrier layer shall be
constructed as follows:
A. Onsite selected soil shall be placed on the finished foundation layer.
B. Onsite selected soil shall be spread over the finished foundation layer in a single loose
layer of approximately 13 inches. (The 13-inch thickness may be adjusted to allow for a
final compacted barrier layer of 12.5 inches minimum).
C. The 20 percent imported Ione clay (by dry weight) shall be spread evenly over the
uncompacted 13-inch loose lift. This should give an uncompacted clay depth of
approximately 3 inches.
As a guide for determining necessary quantities of Ione clay, a 500-foot by 500-foot
square area will require approximately 3,500 tons. This figure is based on 20 to 22
percent moisture content for Ione clay, 115 pounds per cubic foot inplace dry density
each, a minimum 12-inches compacted thickness. Modifications to the spread rate may
be necessary during construction depending on changes in these parameters.
The 20 percent imported Ione clay (by dry weight) shall be spread evenly over the
uncompacted 13-inch loose lift. This should give an uncompacted clay depth of
approximately 3 inches.
The contractor shall not begin premixing until the Engineer has approved the spreading
of Ione clay.
GSM.md 3EI94 Page 16 of 24
Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder, Inc.
