APPENDIX A SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS PROCEDURES INTRODUCTION The sampling and analysis procedures for the monitoring program at San Joaquin County sanitary �' q h' landfills provide for consistent and reproducible sampling methods, proper application of analytical methods, accurate and precise analytical results, and guidelines so that the overall objectives of the monitoring program are achieved. The following documents have been used as guidelines for the development of these procedures: • Procedures Manual for Groundwater Monitoring at Solid Waste Disposal Facilities, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA)-530/SW-611,August 1977 • RCRA Groundwater Monitoring Technical Enforcement Guidance Document, OSWER 9950.1, September 1986 • Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste: Ph sical/Chemical Methods - Y Methods, SW 846, 3rd edition,November 1986 • Methods for Organic Chemical Analysis of Municipal and Industrial Wastewater USEPA-600/4-82-057,July 1982 • Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes, USEPA-600/4-79-020 revised March 1983 GROUNDWATER ELEVATION SURVEY Monitoring wells at the site are measured with an electric sounder for static water levels during a single water level survey prior to collecting groundwater samples. The electric sounder is a transistorized instrument that uses a reel-mounted, two-conductor, coaxial cable that connects the control panel to the sensor. Cable markings are stamped at 1-foot increments. The water level is measured by lowering the sensor into the monitoring well. A low-current circuit is completed when the sensor contacts the water, which serves as an electrolyte. The current is amplified and fed into an indicator light and audible buzzer, signaling when water has been contacted.
