11
IOU
From: Becky Klingman [BKlingman@millerbrooksenv.com]
Sent: Monday, September 08, 2008 12:31 PM
To: Natalia Subbotnikova [EH]
Subject: follow up question regarding permits
IR Page 1 of 1
Hi Natalia,
Thanks for returning my call. We will be drilling into the cap of the landfill to install the methane system.
Here is the description from our workplan:
Vent wells will be installed adjacent to areas indicating methane concentrations exceeding 5% along
the perimeter of the landfill, specifically, adjacent to PGP -1 and PGP -2. The lateral spacing for the
passive vent network will range from 100 feet to 150 feet depending on the configuration of the landfill.
The vent wells will be installed 50 feet from the edge of the landfill. In addition, four vent wells will be
installed in the center of the landfill to release landfill gas in the areas of maximum accumulation.
Figure 3 presents the proposed vent well locations for the four interior vents which will be determined in
the field based on lithology and/or waste characteristics.
Each vent well will be installed by drilling a 10 -inch diameter boring to the base of the waste, estimated
to be at a depth of approximately 30 feet below ground surface. The boring will be completed as a
vent well by installing 4 -inch diameter HFPE (or equivalent) pipe that is perforated within the waste. The
perforated interval will have 1/2 -inch holes and the perforated portion will be covered with a geofabric
sock. The annular space adjacent to the screen will be filled with 3/8 -inch pea gravel. The annular
space that extends from one foot above the screen to the surface will be filled with a 3 -foot layer of
hydrated bentonite chips followed by cement bentonite grout. The upper portion of the borehole will
be sealed with concrete. The well will be connected to a 200 pound canister of granular activated
carbon and a temporary vent riser that will be 10 feet tall and capped with a weather head. Final
configurations will be determined after testing and engineering as described below. Figure 4 presents
the vent well design.
I am assuming we will need intall permits for each?
Thanks,
Becky
Becky Klingman
Project Scientist
Miller Brooks Environmental, Inc.
2124 Main Street, Suite 200
Huntington Beach, Ca 92648
Office: 714.500.5405
Cell: 714.944.9303
Fax: 714.960.2462
Please join our efforts in supporting the American Heart Association's Orange County Heart Walk.
