Controls are in place to monitor the temperature and moisture of the material.
Temperature is monitored with a standard zero degree to 180 degree dial-type
thermometer with a 3-foot probe. The moisture is monitored with an Aquateer Model
100 Moisture Meter. Temperature and moisture are monitored by the operator regularly
when the material is being processed.
During the process, temperatures range from 50 degrees to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The
material is turned, generally, when temperatures begin to decline or when moisture
exceeds 50%. During dry conditions, tap water is added to the pile, using a Lenier-type
sprinkler placed atop the windrow.
No chemical additives are used in the process.
Noise from the facility is not a problem. The equipment generates a minimal amount of
noise and the area around the site is mostly industrial.
CONTROL MEASURES FOR:
1) Litter - The facility is surrounded by a chain-link fence to keep litter on
site. Any litter will be regularly collected by site employees.
2) Odor - Odor will be controlled by the process used to compost the material. The
windrows will be turned frequently to prevent anaerobic conditions from
developing. If there are odor problems then the process will be modified to
include reducing composting activities during high odor periods and to perform
turning with low wind conditions.
3) Rodents and insects-The facility will operate to suppress vectors. Proper process
control will minimize rodents and insects.
4) Equipment breakdown - California Waste Removal Systems, Inc. has an
agreement with Schultze Brothers Trucking to provide back up equipment if
needed. Additionally, rental equipment is available in the Stockton area.
S) Power failure - There is no provision for emergency power since no threatening
situation could occur because of a power failure. None of the equipment
associated with composting operates on electric power.
Under er normal operation compost 6) Maximum storage time - d p post is removed within 3
months. Maximum storage is 18 months.
7) Noise - Workers will be provided with ear protection as necessary and required.
Off-site noise will not be a concern since the surrounding land use is industrial.
umIM 16
erry m
J 1992
