This Act strives to make recycling <br />convenient for consumers, throughout California by requiring a recycling location <br />to be established within 1/2 mile of every supermarket that annually grosses two <br />milliort dollars or more. Each 1/2 mile radius circle around a supermarket is called <br />anVmieflge ZZon� lC . The Act also encourages recycling by establishing a one <br />cent ($O,O value on al soft drink, beer, and soda water containers that maybe <br />" <br />redeemed y consumers at their local recycling centers. <br />Lt(jAL RESPONSIBILITIES <br />BEVERAGES COVEREI) BY AB 2020 <br />A hpveragg is beer and other malt beverages, carbonated mineral and soda waters, and carbonated soft <br />drinks sold in plastic, Imetal or glass: <br />VOtI Allt° A DEALER <br />Aal is any person who sells v = in beverage containers to consumers. This does not include <br />lodging, eat�ng3 deinking establishment or soft drink vending machine operators. There are two types <br />of dealers! dealers inside 4, CZ and dealers outside <br />a CZ. <br />POSSIBLE FINES <br />Unless a CZ is exempt from the recycling center requirement, all dealers insia.,QZ are responsible for <br />making sure a 'recycling locAtioti is, and continues to be, established within their CZ by, and after, <br />3 January 1,1988.' 1f one is not established by, toveiiiber 1 ,1987,'all dealers within that CZ will be <br />' notified by the department and mforrhed of their responsibility for establishing a recycling location. <br />l-Mi:tive January i, 1988j all dealers,; within CZ's that do <br />not contain recycling locations] will have to <br />either reiieem'all types of beverage containers or b a $100 ob er fineunlit a is established <br />If, after Janizary 1, 1988, a recycling location in a CZ ceases to e)dst, the Department will notify the <br />dealers iri that CZ that a recycling location must be established within 90 days. If at the end of the 90 <br />days, a recycling location has not been established, those dealers must either redeem all types of <br />beverage containers or r day fin un i) gng i a li hed. <br />PTING A SIGN <br />Ort and after, October 1,1987; g dealers inside and outside CZ's. must post a sign in their store <br />indicating the address of the nearest recycling location. The sign will be provided by the Department <br />of Conservation prior to Septembbe 1, 1987. At that time, we will also provide you with a list <br />of certified recycling cents located near you. The signs will have a space for; you to insert the <br />- address of'the nearest -recycling location. We will also notify you of any sign placement requirements. <br />RECY" <br />CLING BEGINS OCTOBER 1, 1987 <br />" Consumers begin redeeming beverage containers at recycling centers on October 1, 1987. Only containers that <br />are labeled "California Redemption Value" or "CA. Redemption Value" are eligible for the 1 cent redemption. <br />
