SAFETY TRAINING
The goal of safety training is to develop safe work habits and attitudes. It is critical that new
workers understand work rules and procedures prior to being assigned to a job. Supervisors are
responsible for providing safety training to their department employees. The following
guidelines should be helpful in properly training new hires and newly assigned personnel.
BE PREPARED
1. Have a timetable—how much skill do you expect? How soon?
2. Breakdown the job—list important steps, pick out the key points.
(Safety is always a key point!).
3. Have everything ready—prepare equipment,materials and supplies.
4. Have the workplace prepared—have everything as close to reality as possible.
5. Remember, when teaching adults, it is best"share"our experiences rather the
"lecture" about how much we know. Adults learn best when they are a part of a
group and are treated with respect. No one likes to be talked down to.
HOW TO INSTRUCT
1. Prepare—put the worker at ease. Define the job and find out how much they may
already know. Develop interest.
2. Present—tell, show and illustrate ONE STEP at a time.
3. Try out performance—have the person do the job-correct errors. Make sure the
person understands. Repeat until you know they understand.
4. Follow up—put them on their own. Designate to whom to go for help. Check often.
Encourage question. Don't"Mother Hen" trainees.
Make sure that each person knows that"The Safe Way is the right Way". Each employee will
have an EMPLOYEE SAFETY TRAINING CHECKLIST on file. A sample check list is the
following page.
7
