Email this Article Text Size: A <br />�o <br />NO iUSE <br />A former CA arvesl Home An al sanctuali <br />v <br />EREVIGU ;CHET <br />May 27, 2007 6:00 AM <br />As a Stockton landowner who cares about my community and the <br />welfare of animals, I'm dismayed there are plans for another <br />massive factory farm in our area. <br />The proposed 900,000 -hen egg operation by Olivera Family Farms <br />stinks - and not just in terms of noxious manure odors residents will <br />be forced to endure. <br />It stinks because the company has a terrible track record with <br />animal welfare. <br />In 2005, Olivera earned media attention by abandoning 140,000 <br />hens to perish in filthy cages in a shed in Gilroy. <br />The person who bought the land from Olivera allowed animal <br />protection groups to rescue as many birds as they could. Today, 30 <br />survivors of that factory farm live at our Stockton sanctuary. <br />These hens are curious and friendly.
