U.S. EPA offers free educational software programs to
by Natalie Eddy
NSFC Staff Writer
April 1993 Small Flows
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , Region V, is offering
free environmental software programs for IBM or IBM compatible computers
to governmental agencies.
Twenty software programs were available at presstime with 14 more
planned for release in the future, according to Alfred Krause, EPA
Region V outreach coordinator.
Software programs are offered in the areas of wastewater treatment,
drinking water, water conservation, general education about water,
agriculture, and health.
Governmental agencies eligible to receive the software include school
districts; local, state, and federal government offices; municipality
and county agencies; and utility districts.
"We had originally been aiming at a fairly modest audience, but once the
first couple of programs were produced, it attracted a much larger
audience than we had anticipated, " said Krause.
To receive the free programs, governmental agencies should send a blank
high-density disk to Glennis Zywicki, EPA Deputy Outreach Coordinator,
77 W. Jackson, WCP-15J, Chicago, Illinois, 60604 .
The general public may purchase duplicates of the software programs from
two sources. Purdue University of West Lafayette, Indiana, offers the
complete set of programs for $125 or $15 per disk. This includes
shipping and handling fees and infinite update rights.
For information about the Purdue program, call 317-494-1172 or write to
The Farm Building Plan Service, Purdue University, 1146 AGEN Building,
West Lafayette, Indiana, 47907-1146.
Public Brand Software of Indianapolis, Indiana, offers the programs for
$5 per disk, plus a $5 shipping and handling charge per order, or $99
for the complete set.
For more information about the Public Brand Software or to order, call
1-800-426-3475 or write to Public Brand Software, P.O. Box 51315,
Indianapolis, Indiana, 46251.
Krause said more than 5, 000 orders for the software programs, including
the two alternate sources, have been filled.
Software programs to be offered in the future include a complete
computer based course in the principles of environmental assessment and
an electronic visual atlas of North American plant species.
The programs were developed from the National Network for Environmental
Management Studies, a project that funded college students to work on
selected projects.
Krause said the first programs were established under this program in
