This data
was collected during the calendar year, 1993.
Background Information
The City of Tracy operates a State approved land application program (Order No. 91-
160). The City applies air dried sludge on approximately 2000 acres of City and farmer
owned land. During 1993, the City applied 1447 short tons or 1309 metric tons of sludge.
Based on the EPA monitoring criteria, a total of four quarterly samples must be collected
per year at this application rate and monitored for the EPA 503 criteria.
The City applies anaerobically digested sludge to air drying beds and the sludge dries for
at least three months before application. Sludge is stockpiled in the air drying beds and
applied in the fall or spring of each year.
Sampling Procedures
Samples of air dried sludge were collected during three sampling events.
Samples of stockpiled sludge were collected on March 19, 1993, before a spring
application. Sludge that was not applied during the previous fall was removed from the
beds and stockpiled in one location. The stockpiles were divided into four quadrants and
a 500 ml plastic beaker filled from a location near the center of each quarter. Sample
aliquots were combined in a plastic bucket, mixed and sent to an outside laboratory for
EPA 503 metals analyses.
