QUANTITY OF RESIDUALS ACCEPTED
Approximately 200 tons of Residuals are accepted per day.
However, the quantity does fluctuate in proportion to the canneries
daily output.
WORK PLAN
Description of Operation
The Spread and Disc operation is ideal for returning food
production residuals to the soils from which they came
and is now a widely accepted practice. By the very
nature of the types of residuals accepted at the Site
requires special-attention and equipment to preclude the
creation of a nusicance and health hazard. Cannery
residuals are transported to the Site, unloaded and
spread evenly over a planned spread area. Residuals are
allowed to dry and are then incorporated into the soil.
Through this process organic matter decomposes and leads
to the formation of Humus, which increases the soils
capacity to promote plant growth. Furthermore, the soils
internal structure is rearranged in a fashion which
promotes better adsorption of water.
Description of Residuals
Organic residuals provide a useful source of Nitrogen for
the agricultural crops. The residuals spread at the
Delta Container Site yield up to .6% Nitrogen by dry
weight for fruit materials and nearly 3.2% Nitrogen by
dry weight for Tomato residuals.
Description of Monitoring System
Monitoring operations of the Site include Daily records
of the total number of loads delivered,, locations of
spreading area, a Log of unusual occurrences, removal of
non-biodegradable material, and soil sampling before and
after spreading operations.
Description of Equipment
A four wheel drive farm tractor is used to pull a 12,
wide Box Scraper when spreading the wet residuals. Every
12 hours the deposited residuals are incorporated into
the soil using Spring Tooth cultivator. Within 5 days of
deposition the materials are completely dried. The
regime presented has been designed in order to disrupt
the normal reproduction cycle of the common Fly. A
variety of if different vehicles are used to transport
4
