Guidlines for Processing Canning Residuals
Direct Animal Feeding
Food processing waste should not be delivered to the feeding site in excess of the amount required to
sustain the animals for a 48 hour period.
All food processing waste not consumed immediately or within the above time period should be used for
soil improvement, ensilaging, or landfill.
Feeding mangers should be constructed so as to minimize leakage and be easily cleanable, and should be
cleaned regularly.
Soil Improvement
Prior to deposit of wastes, the ground is prepared to facilitate drying of wastes.
Immediately after deposit, the waste material should be spread thinly one to three inches deep to promote
drying and to eliminate potential fly breeding.
Within 24 hours after spreading, the waste material should be stirred to promote drying. Immediately
thereafter, this procedure is continued until drying is completed, and then finally waste is incorporated
into the soil. Chemical makeup of the waste become application limits for agriculturally productive
fields: About 200 lbs of nitrogen per acre is considered sufficient for most crops. This is equivalent to
about 150 cubic yards of tomato waste/acre.
Ensilaging
Liquid drainage from the food processing waste cannot become an odor nuisance, facilitate fly breeding,
or flow or leak into ground or surface waters.
Raw food processing waste should not be stored at the ensilaging site for longer than 48 hours.
The site has to be kept free of spillage of raw food processing wastes.
Transfer Pad
A transfer pad must have smooth walls and floor which can easily be scraped clean of waste (ex.
concrete).
No waste should remain on the pad longer than 24 hours.
Area in close vicinity of pad must be kept free of spilled or accumulated waste.
Fruit Pit Srorage
Fruit pits must be kept in such a manner as to promote drying and the minimization of fly breeding.
Insect spraying equipment should be available.
