Blass Environmental Management Inc 31D Qtr 2003 Groundwater Monrtonng Report
002-70950-04 U-Haul#709-50
Groundwater measurements from U-Haul's "B" casings, in addition to groundwater measurements
provided by GZA for the Former Harry's Auto Mart monitoring wells, were used to derive a
groundwater gradient map illustrating groundwater conditions at both sites The average groundwater
flow direction using the September 8, 2003 data from the U-Haul "B" well casings appears to be
predominantly to the southeast across the northern portion of the U-Haul site The average groundwater
I flow direction at the Former Harry's Auto Mart site and the southern portion of the U-Haul property
appears to radiate southwest to northwest from a high point centered near the southern part of the
intersection of Wilson Way and Sangumetti Lane (Figure 3) Groundwater gradient maps were not
generated for the "C"horizon since all screened intervals in the "C" wells were submerged
In addition to water level depths, Blaes Environmental also measured dissolved oxygen levels from
selected well casings using a YSI-95 dissolved oxygen meter The method for measuring dissolved
oxygen content of groundwater is described in Appendix B The results indicated that dissolved oxygen
levels during this monitoring event ranged from 6 9% in well MW-5B to 22 5% in well MW-5C
(Table 2)
• 3 2 GROUNDWATER SAMPLING—SEPTEMBER 2003
On September 8, 9, 10, and 11, 2003, Blaes Environmental collected 17 groundwater samples from the
on-site and off-site monitoring wells that contained water The current groundwater level did not allow
for sampling of any of U-Haul's"A"casing wells
Groundwater sample collection involved purging approximately three well volumes of groundwater from
each well and allowing the wells to recharge before sample collection Purging was performed during
this event either by hand bailing or pumping water from the well casings, dependent on the volume of
I - water in the well The bailer used for purging during this sampling event was a 1&718-inch diameter by
3-foot long bailer Blaes Environmental utilized a 2" Grundfos "Reda-flo" submersible pump for purging
Cby pumping The bailers and pump were decontaminated before and after purging each well with a
liquid detergent wash (Alconox®) and a tap-water rinse Periodic parameter readings were recorded on
the field data sheets included in Appendix A The groundwater purging procedures are presented in
7
I
