PHS/EHD has the following comments for your
consideration.
The work plan proposed a series of push-point soil borings to investigate the vertical and
horizontal extent of soil contamination and to assess possible impacts to groundwater. One
soil boring, SP1, will be advanced to groundwater w ich is expected to be encountered at
approximately 20 feet below ground surface (bgs). rhe proposal indicated that soil samples
would be collected from each soil boring at four foot intervals beginning at 6 feet bgs.
Please note that soil contamination was evidenced at 2.5 feet bgs beneath piping which was
removed; therefore, PHSIEHD recommends that you begin collecting soil samples at 2 feet
bgs rather than collecting the first soil sample at 10 eet bgs. Also, you must be aware that
piping remains in place which has not been sampled nor properly abandoned. Site
certification will not be issued until the remaining piping has been removed or properly
abandoned and a sample(s) collected from beneath the piping. The work plan stated that
selected soil samples would undergo laboratory an lysis. Please contact PHSIEHD to
discuss the selection of soil samples which will undergo laboratory analysis, so that sufficient
soil samples will undergo analysis to characterize the extent of soil contamination.
Once PHSIEHD has received the appropriate permi fees, PHSIEHD will issue the drilling
permit, and you may proceed with scheduling the proposed field work. Please contact
PHSIEHD at least two working days prior to initiating field activities, so that PHSIEHD may
schedule site inspections.
If I can answer any questions or to schedule a site inspection, please do not hesitate to
contact me at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Mary Meays, Senior REHS N=;oREH
Site Mitigation Unit S upervisor
MM/1701 WAS.WOR
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB cr.: Ken Jones, Twinning
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
