Spill Cleanup
Routine Spill Cleanup Procedure
Protective equipment (e.g., disposable gloves, safety glasses, optional safety apron)
must be worn prior to starting containment and clean-up of the spill. The required protective
equipment is provided in the spill kit.
1. Retrieve the closest spill or gather the following supplies from the Accumulation Station:
absorbent, broom, dust pan and self-sealing hazardous waste bag(s).
2. If the container is still leaking, stop the leakage immediately. If the container is on its side,
set it upright; if the cap is loose, tighten securely.
3. Starting at the outside edge of the spill, pour a ring of absorbent all the way around to keep
the liquid from spreading. Sprinkle the rest of the spill with sufficient absorbent. Allow the
absorbent to soak up as much liquid as possible.
4. Sweep up the absorbed material with the broom and dustpan. Place the waste materials in
the self-sealing bag. Double-bag the waste if necessary.
5. Use paper towels to blot the spill area and absorb any remaining spill. Place the paper
towels, disposable gloves, and any additional cleanup materials into the self-sealing bag(s).
6. Use a mop with water only to further clean up any trace amounts of liquid. This mop water
may be disposed of down the maintenance sink.
7. Transport the waste to the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Station.
8. Using a permanent black marker, label the outside of the bag(s) with the name of the spilled
product and the contents (e.g., "Comet Spray Cleanup Materials"). Place the sealed waste
into the appropriate container.
Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide 6 April 2019,ver 1.0
