3.4.3 Analytical Results
The laboratory data were compiled into seven sampling categories: ash, underlying ash,
background, confirmation, U.S. EPA split, pyrolytic oil, and water. Analytical results, labo-
ratory data, and chain-of-custody forms are included in Appendix J. Analytical results are
summarized below.
3.4.3.1 Ash, Underlying Soil, and Background Samples
The Title 22 Metals, TTLC, analyses showed that the three burn ash samples (AS-1, AS-2,
and AS-3) contained high levels of zinc that ranged from 32,000 mg/kg to 156,000 mg/kg
(e.g., 3.2 to 15 percent by volume) while TRPH results were all below 1,100 mg/kg. Because
the zinc levels exceed the TTLC limit of 5,000 mg/kg, and cadmium, chromium cobalt, and
lead TTLC results exceeded 10 times the STLC limits, a CAM-17 STLC analysis was per-
formed on the three ash samples. AS-2 contained cobalt (82 mg/L), lead (37 mg/L) and zinc
(5,410 mg/L), which exceeds the STLC limit of 80, 5, and 250 mg/L, respectively. AS-1 and
AS-3 contained zinc at concentrations of 2,330 and 6.500 mg/L. The STLC DI analysis
revealed zinc concentrations were 6.4 to 129 mg/L. In general, the ash analysis indicated
cobalt, copper, lead and zinc were above background levels. No other metals were elevated
above background levels.
Electrical conductivity in the ash ranged from 31,400 to 52,600 µmhos/cm. Sulfate (SO4'2)
anions and TDS were also high. Sulfates ranged from 19,100 to 42,300 mg/L, while TDS
ranged from 32,500 to 71,000 mg/L. The pH in the ash ranged from 6.6 in AS-3 to 7.7 in
AS-1. Only six semi-volatile organics were detected in ash at the parts per billion level
(µg/kg). Anthracene, benzo(k)-fluoranthene, benzoic acid, chrysene, fluoranthene, and
naphthalene were detected from 340 to 3,600 µg/kg.
No metals were detected above background ranges in the underlying soil samples. The pH
ranged from 7.8 to 9.9, and the electrical conductivity varied from 1,200 to 6,400 µmhos/cm.
Sulfate anions and TDS ranged from 77 to 2,640 mg/L and 950 to 3040 mg/L, respectively.
No semi-volatile organics, per EPA Method 8270, were detected in the underlying samples.
Analytical results on the background samples (BSS-1 through BSS-4) revealed barium
ranged from 172 to 410 mg/kg, chromium 51 to 68 mg/kg, cobalt 8.7 to 9.2 mg/kg, copper 22
to 28 mg/kg, lead 6.9 to 9.2 mg/kg, and zinc 49 to 74 mg/kg. Electrical conductivity was
reported at 921 µmhos/cm, TDS was not detected, and sulfate anions were 29 mg/L. The pH
in the background soil samples ranged 7.2 to 8.1. No semi-volatile organics, per EPA Method
8270, were detected.
