LFR Levine-Fricke <br /> SILVER <br /> Silver is a white, metallic solid with no odor. Human systemic effects by ingestion of <br /> silver include argyrosis (skin effects). It is a questionable carcinogen with experimental <br /> tumorigenic data. It is flammable in the form of dust when exposed to flame or by <br /> chemical reaction to strong acids. Exposure to silver can cause discoloration of blue- <br /> gray darkening of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. <br /> • The OSHA PEL is listed as 0.01 mg/m' for metal and soluble compounds. <br /> • The Cal/OSHA PEL is listed as 0.01 mg/m' for metal and soluble compounds. <br /> • The TLV is listed as 0.1 mg/m' for metal, and 0.01 mg& for soluble compounds. <br /> ZINC <br /> Zinc is a bluish-white, lustrous metallic element, and zinc oxide is a white fume. <br /> Short-term exposure to zinc oxide fume can cause a flu-like illness called metal fume <br /> fever. Symptoms of metal fume fever include headache, fever, chills, muscle ache, <br /> nausea, vomiting, weakness, and tiredness. Pure zinc powder, dust, and fume is <br /> relatively non-toxic to humans by inhalation. However, the inhalation of zinc oxides <br /> may cause a sweet taste, throat dryness, cough, weakness, generalized aches, chills, <br /> nausea, and vomiting. Zinc is flammable in the form of dust when exposed to heat or <br /> flame and may ignite spontaneously in air when dry.
