A1.0 DATA VALIDATION AND QUALITY CONTROL <br /> Data validation and quality control tasks involve laboratory data reduction, laboratory <br /> data reporting, data validation, and a data usability assessment. Each task is described <br /> below. <br /> A1.1 Data Reduction <br /> Data reduction applies to the procedure used by the laboratory in generating a summary <br /> of the analytical methods and in reporting results. The laboratory analyst generates the <br /> analytical data and has the prime responsibility for the correctness and completeness of <br /> the data. Laboratory data generated during sampling activities will be reduced following <br /> protocols specified in the EPA Method SW 846 (U.S. EPA 1995). This will be the first <br /> level of review. At a minimum, the following will be reviewed and ensured by laboratory <br /> personnel: <br /> Sample extraction/digestion information is correct and complete. <br /> • Analysis information is correct and complete. <br /> • The appropriate standard operating procedures, laboratory Quality Assurance Plan <br /> (QAP), and methods have been followed. <br /> • Analytical results are correct and complete (including calculations). <br /> • Surrogate recoveries and internal standard areas are within established control <br /> limits. <br /> • Quality Control (QC) samples are within established control limits. <br /> Blanks are within established control limits. <br /> • Documentation is complete for all sample results, QC samples, and instrument <br /> calibrations. <br /> • All corrections on raw data and forms have been documented, initialed, and dated by <br /> the reviewer. <br /> The laboratory must maintain a program to certify that all data reduction software used <br /> for automatic sample calculations is accurate. The laboratory must verify its results and <br /> detection limits and the laboratory project manager or designated senior staff should <br /> sign the data report before it is released. <br /> A1.2 Data Reporting Requirements <br /> Analytical results for soil sample data will be reported in the laboratories' approved <br /> format, described below. In addition to the reported data, the laboratory data report will, <br /> at a minimum, include a narrative that will discuss any problems or discrepancies, and <br /> sufficient calibration and QC information to determine that the method was in control at <br /> the time that the samples were analyzed. <br /> Sampling Plan for Small Waste Disposal Areas (final).doc A_1 <br />
