The site is situated in a former 40-acre gravel pit south of the City <br /> of Tracy. <br /> Ii <br /> PROJECT DESCRIPTION: On August 7, 1998, <br /> , 1998, the tires being illegally stored at the TTFS were ignited. <br /> It was estimated that the site contained seven million tires when the fire erupted. The fire burned for <br /> more that two and a half years before being extinguished by the Board in December 2000. Approximately <br /> 45,000 to 60,000 cubic yards of zinc and lead contaminated materials remain on site. The remnants of <br /> the burned tires include ash,wire, and pyrolytic oil. The site also contains abandoned vehicles, metal <br /> debris,scorch equipment, 50,000+used oil filters, and a number of used of drums. The site remedial <br /> action plan for the removal of the contaminated sol is being completed by the California Integrated Waste <br /> Management Board and coordinated through the Department of Toxic and Substances Control and the <br /> Central Valley Water Quality Board. This report should be available by early June 2003. <br /> 3 <br /> This Notice and Exemption only covers the removal of the abandoned vehicles, metal debris, scorched <br /> equipment, 50,000+used oil filters, used oil drums and site logical issues (i.e., power, communications, <br /> access issues and restrictions for Phase II). The Board's remediation contractor will remove and haul the <br /> oil filters,solid waste, and drums of used oil to an appropriate facility. Metal debris, including appliances, <br /> vehicles, and equipment,will be segregated from solid waste and hauled to appropriate recycling <br /> facilities. Once the debris is removed, the Board's contractor will begin setting up a staging area for <br /> future remediation work and then demobilize. No new roads or work areas will be created in the gravel pit <br /> during this phase of the Tracy Tire Fire Remediation Project.
