T..iT
HEET
for SPECTRACE 9000
POST gTTEWORK
• The instrument has been used primarily on sites with lead, copper.
chromium, nickel. zinc and arsenic contamination. More than SO % of
Spectrace 9000 and all field XRF use is on lead and arsenic contaminated sites.
• The effective quantitative range for most analytes is gencraily above 50 µg/g•
The instrument is excellent for detecting hot spots when soil contamination is
above this.
• The detection limit can be determined by analyzing a low level standard at
least seven times. Find the standard deviation and multiply by three.
MDL = SD(3)
• Moist soils need to be dried.
• Mix sample thoroughly to increase sampie homogeneity.
• ii sing analysis time and additional anaivsis create more representative
anal ticai results.
• The best wav to insure that the lab and the field sample are similar is to
analyze the sample sent to the lab with the XRF before sending it to the lab.
• Calibration check standards are mandatory to insure the instruments precision.
• Analyze a blank. low, high and performance evaluation sample for every 10
analysis.
• The TAT recommends the use of NIST standards and site general standards
for rices. ?'he T:kT recommends the use of NIST
standards and site cre-f-'c standards (if possible) for iong term assessments anc
removals.
• Have a contingency plan if the :SRF is inoperable. ie. a backup XRF from
another region or a backup laboratory.
MORTI T7ATION
• PERFORM instrument checks before mobilization and upon arrival.
• Follow shipping instructions! The instrument is not as rugged as other field
instruments.
• Use the shock sensor on the shipping box and heat sensor on the probe durinz
shipping. (Heat sensor should be stored in a refrigerator «-hen not in use).
• Unplug batten, before shipping.
• Use a computer and Lotus spreadsheets to download data and perform data
validation.
