Box 1020 • Stockton,CA 95201 • (209) 168.6600 PUBLIC INFORMATION UPDA TE Contact: Allyson Keller, PIO August 12, 1998, 3 PM (209)468-6040 For Immediate Release Tracy Tire Fire Health Advisory -- General Information San Joaquin County-- Dr. Karen Furst, San Joaquin County Health Officer,has issued the following health advisory regarding the Tracy tire fire: • The State Air Resources Board is doing air quality testing around the Tracy tire fire area. Testing near the site shows the air quality is within normal levels for this time of year in the Tracy area. Samples were taken within a 1/2 mile down wind of the fire and compared to areas away from the fire plume. • Although the winds have been elevating the fire plume into the upper air regions,a change in weather could periodically lower the smoke to ground level. If this occurs,people should take shelter indoors, with the doors and windows closed, or immediately leave the area until the smoke clears. • As the hot temperatures have set in again, there has been a general worsening of the air quality in the Central Valley due to increased ozone levels,and the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Co of District has issued a"Spare the Air"advisory for today. The Tracy tire fire is contributing dparticulate matter to the general air pollution in the area,as any large fire would. Because of these factors,there may be additional health concerns for people with chronic lung disease, heart disease,those ovcr 65 and young children. Healthy people may also experience some symptoms such as sore,scratchy throat, or watery eyes. • People in high risk groups and anyone experiencing symptoms should take precautions. Stay indoors as much as possible and keep the doors and windows closed. People who are very sensitive to the pollution may want to consider temporarily relocating. • People who are experiencing respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath or tightness in the chest should contact their physician or seek emergency medical attention. • Pollution causing activities should be limited,including use of barbecues, lawn mowers, limit driving, etc. • Ash and soot should be washed off outdoor furniture,children's toys and play areas.
