What is the problem, what precipitated the
response, what agencies and companies are on site, who has taken the lead for
the response and for environmental clean-up actions?
A major tire fire was reported to emer ency services on 08/07/9$ An unknown amount of tires
are situated in the bottom of an oldrg avel quarry Agencies on-scene duringthe initial response
were Air Quality_CDF. County-Health,Co. OES,Fire Department, Sheriff EPA and START.
During the initial response air quality was the issue of most environmental concernDue to the
possibility of very shallow ground water and the possibility of nearby shallow private drinking
water wells the START has been tasked by the EPA to provide a time critical groundwater
sampling planCurrently it is unknown how many well surround th4 site The. START is
currently researching well numbers, locations and construction. Also of interest is any surface
water ponds.creeks, or other feature where recharge to the subsurface could occur. The
proposed sampling will focus on chemicals normally associated with tire fires These will
include but not be limited to PAH's. metals (zinc, lead, cadmium chromium&arsenic) volatile
organics, and semi-volatile organics.
2.0 Objectives
2.1 Data Use Objectives. Data will be used by the EPA's Emergency Response
Office as a baseline of groundwater quality in the area
surrounding the tire fire location. Future sampling will
occur which will be compared to initial results. Data will
also be used to insure that private water wells have not been
impacted by chemicals migrating from the tire fire.
_heck_Appropriate Box(es)
Soils or water sample data that is generated will be used:
E&Elc oU-wuerga3 P/05-14.97
2
