13 August 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0330
Prior to laboratory analysis, the PHS-EHD will be given an opportunity to review samples selected
for analysis.
4.0. PROCEDURES
4.1. ADVANCEMENT OF SOIL BORINGS
The following procedures will be performed for the advancement of soil borings:
• Notify the Public Health Services - Environmental Health Division at least 48 hours prior to
commencement of any work, while securing proper city/county permits.
• Prepare a Site Health and Safety Plan in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health
Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities.
• Mark soil boring locations at least 48 hours in advance for an Underground Service Alert
(USA) check of underground utilities or pipes.
•. Soil borings will be advanced utilizing a truck-mounted, hollow stem drill rig and 8.25-inch
hollow-stem augers. A minimum of two soil borings will be advanced to a depth of
approximately 60-feet bsg. Proposed boring locations are depicted on Figure 2.
• Soils are to be described using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Soil sample
descriptions and PID screening results will be summarized on boring logs prepared in a report
of findings.
• Soil cuttings will be stockpiled on-site on plastic sheeting; rinseate generated during drilling
activities will be containerized in properly labeled D.O.T. model 17H 55-gallon drums, and
stored on-site in an area inaccessible to the general public. Disposal alternatives will be
evaluated based on results of the soil and ground water analysis.
• Decontamiliate sampling equipment in an Alconox solution and rinse with water prior to each
sampling run. Hollow stem augers will be steam cleaned prior to each boring advancement..
• Collect grab ground water samples from each soil boring utilizing hydro-punch technology.
The hollow stem auger will be driven down to a point just above the water table. A hydro-
punch will be placed through the hollow stem of the augers utilizing hollow rods. The hydro-
punch will then be driven past the lead auger bit into undisturbed materials a few feet below
the water table. Ground water will flow through a steel screen and collected utilizing a small
diameter steel bailer and nylon rope. Ground water samples will be containerized in 40-m1
VOA vials and 1-liter amber bottles
• Label and log samples on a chain-of-custody form.
• Store samples in a chilled container and transport to a State-certified laboratory for analysis.
Advanced GeoEn-Oromnental,ILte.
