: s -
Soil Sample Collection And Sample Analysis
Two soil samples were collected from the excavation area. Sample SF-2 was collected
from directly beneath the building foundation wall at a depth of 3.5 feet below the
ground surface (bgs) by coring 2 to 2.5 feet horizontally into the south side wall of the
excavation. Sample SB-2 was collected from beneath the bottom of the seven foot
excavation, at a depth of 9.0 to 9.5 feet bgs (approximately 6 feet north of the building
wall). Both samples were collected by first augering into the excavation side wall and
bottom with a hand auger and then by driving 2x6 inch stainless steel sampling tubes
with a manually operated (hammer driven) coring device an additional 0.5 feet. The
hand auger and sampling device were disassembled and thoroughly cleaned between
sampling events with a laboratory regent soap/water mixture, a fresh water rinse, and
a distilled water final rinse. The soil stockpile was visually quartered and four separate
samples (to be laboratory composited) were collected in similar sampling tubes.
Following sample collections, each tube was sealed with teflon sheeting and plastic end
caps secured with elastic tape. The samples were labeled as to location, date, time, etc.
and placed in a refrigerated cooler for delivery to GeoAnalytical Laboratories, Inc. of
Modesto, California.
The soil samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon as gasoline (TPH-g),
benzene, toluene, total xylenes and ethybenzene (BTXE compounds), and seven specific
oxygenates (MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETBE, TAME, methanol and ethanol). No oxygenates
were detected in any of the samples. TPH-g was detected in SB-2 at 8100 mg/Kg and in
the soil stockpile composite sample at 6.7 mg/Kg. All BTXE compounds (except
benzene) were detected in samples SB-2 and the soil stockpile sample. Analytical data
is summarized in Table A.1 of Appendix A. A copy of the Analytical Data report is also
attached in Appendix A.
Conclusions And Recommendations
In summary no gasoline related compounds were detected in soil collected beneath the
foundation of the building and no oxygenates were detected in any of the collected soil
samples. High levels of TPH-g and BTXE compounds (excluding benzene) were
detected from beneath the bottom of the soil excavation. Low levels of TPH-g and
BTXE compounds (excluding benzene) were detected from the soil stockpile.
Based on high concentrations of gasoline related compounds detected from soil beneath
the bottom of the excavation, TreaTek recommends that the lateral and vertical extent of
petroleum contamination at the site be defined as requested in the PHS-EHD letter of
July 21, 1997. TreaTek does not believe that further characterization is needed for soils
beneath the sales and service building. This limited investigation indicates that no
oxygenates are present in the petroleum contaminated soil and there does not appear to
