Wilson Way
Stockton, CA. 95205
During monitoring well installations at U-Haus on March 17, 2003, San Joaquin
County Environmental Health Department (EHD) discovered a public water
system (well) at Frontier Motel, located adjacent to the U-Haul site. EHD advised
the U-Haul consultant, Blaes Environmental Management (BEM), to gain access
to the well and sample the groundwater for petroleum constituents associated
with the leaking underground storage tank investigation.
On April 14, 2003, BEM advised EHD that 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA) was
detected in the groundwater sample from the Frontier well. A confirmation
sample collected on April 15, 2003 confirmed the presence of DCA above the
maximum contaminant level (MCL) for drinking water wells and Frontier Motel
was advised that the well was impacted and should not be used.
Frontier Motel management posted notification notices in each room and BEM,
on behalf of U-Haul, provided potable water tanks and a pump to Frontier Motel
as a temporary solution until a permanent potable water supply could be
provided.
U-Haul has been in contact with California Water Service, the public water
supplier for the area, and connection to this public water supply for Frontier Motel
is being investigated.
DCA has been detected in groundwater samples from monitoring wells located at
Harry's Auto Mart and U-Haul and both sites are suspect in contributing to the
impact to the Frontier Motel well. EHD will continue to communicate with all
parties and ensure that Frontier Motel has a water supply that meets drinking
water standards. In addition, EHD will ensure each site investigates and
mitigates the petroleum impact to the groundwater.
