J
4.0 EXCAVATION PROCEDURES
4.1 Excavation
Petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil was excavated from the former UST site on March
17 - 19, 1994. The excavator and operator were provided by Bob Evan's Trucking. Initially,
impacted soil was stockpiled in the fenced area south of the work bays on sheets of plastic.
Because of space limitations, arrangements were made to transport the soil to a ranch
located at 22865 South Henry, in the City of Escalon. Bob Evan's Trucking supplied the
loader and trucks for soil transport.
Approximately 1,150 cubic yards of soil were removed from the former UST site during the
J excavation. The location of the excavation is presented as Figure 4. As the excavation
proceeded, the soil was screened for the presence of organic vapors using a PID. When
organic vapors were not detected by the PID, six soil samples were collected. No
groundwater was encountered during excavation activities. At the completion of sampling
activities and upon approval from Ms. Linda Turkette of the PHS/EHD, the excavation was
backfilled with pea-gravel and washed rock by Bob Evan's Trucking.
4.2 Excavation Soil Sampling and Analysis
.J
Six (6) soil samples were collected from the sidewalls and floor of the excavation on March
19, 1994 (Figure 4). All samples were collected under the direction of Ms. Turkette of the
PHS/EHD.
The soil samples were collected from the excavator bucket using a slide hammer core
sampler loaded with two precleaned 2 x 3-inch brass sleeves. The ends of the lead sleeves
were covered with aluminum sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The samples were placed
in a chilled container, transported under chain-of-custody to McCampbell Analytical Inc. and
analyzed for TPH as gasoline and BTE&X in accordance with EPA methods 8015m and
8020, respectively. Analytical reports and chain-of-custody are presented in Appendix C.
5.0 FINDINGS
5.1 Excavation Soil Sampling
Soil was excavated to a depth of 45 feet below ground surface. One soil sample was
collected from each sidewall and two samples were collected from the excavation floor. All
samples collected were below detection limits for TPH as gasoline and BTE&X. The
laboratory report and chain-of-custody are included in Appendix B.
Geobgid Audit Service+.Ino. p
902-SC3.—RpLID..'.Bugg. O
