:TAL ILAtTH
January 13, 1986 F Et , t f/sEINICES
Laurie Cotulla, R.A.
Registered Sanitarian
Environmental Health Division
San Joaquin Local Health District
P.O. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Bear Laurie:
At the present time the San Joaquin Local Health District
will not approve construction of champagne tank bases in
the area west of the former gasoline Cznk, due to the
Possibility of contamination in the soil below this proposed
site. The assessment report issued by J. H. Kleinfelder &
Associates does not address this immediate problem in their
recommendation section.
The sales of Guild's champagne products is currently
increasing at a rapid pace. This increase necessitates
the installation of these champagne processing tanks as
sidles are currently limited by production capabilities.
Tanks are now on order from L & A Engineering in Turlock
for delivery March 1, 1986.
A sample taken from bore #3 at a 21ft, depth contained
35 ppm of gasoline. This bore hole is approximately 17ft.
from the center of the storage tank. Samples taken from
bores #1 and #2 which are adjacent to the tank indicate
levels from 2,300 ppm to 3,300 ppm of gasoline. Therefore,
it appears that the level of gasoline in the soil drops
dramatically as distance increasesfrom the tank.
Our proposed bore would be located approximately 31ft.
from the tank and just to the east of the champagne tank
based construction area. This is the closest point of
construction to the gasoline tank. It is Guild's assumption
that if soil samples from this proposed bore are clean
down to the level of ground water, there has been no
migration of gasoline through the soil. to this point.
Therefore, construction of the tank bases would be allowed
GUI LD wineries and Distilleries One Winemasters'Way, Lodi, California 95240 (209)30.5151
