3 . 0 GROUNDWATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
On November 30 and December 1, 1999, ASE associate geologist Ian Reed
collected groundwater samples from the site wells for analysis
Monitoring well MW-5 was not sampled due to the free-floating
hydrocarbons present in that well Prior to sampling, the site monitoring
wells were purged of four well casing volumes of groundwater using
pumps and/or dedicated bailers The pH, temperature and conductivity
of the purge water were monitored during evacuation, and samples were
not collected until these parameters stabilized Samples were collected
from the wells using pre-cleaned dedicated polyethylene bailers The
groundwater samples to be analyzed for volatile compounds were
decanted from the bailers into 40-m1 volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials,
preserved with hydrochloric acid and sealed without headspace The
samples to be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel
(TPH-D) were contained in 1-liter amber glass containers All of t h e
samples were labeled and stored on ice for transport to Kiff Analytical,
LLC of Davis, California (FLAP #2236) under appropriate chain-of-custody
documentation Well sampling field logs are presented in Appendix A
The site drinking water well was sampled through a sampling port and was
not purged prior to sampling
Well sampling purge water was contained in 55-gallon steel drums and left
on-site for temporary storage This water will be removed from the site
by Ecologix Environmental Services of Chico, California for transport to an
off-site facility for recycling
4 . 0 GROUNDWATER SAMPLE ANALYSIS
The groundwater samples were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-D) by EPA Method 351018015, and total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G), volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), fuel oxygenates and alcohols by EPA Method 8260 The analytical
i
results for this and previous sampling periods are presented in Table Two
The certified analytical report and chain-of-custody documentation are
included as Appendix B
5.0 CONCLUSIONS
i
The analytical results this quarter are generally very similar to previous
results Free-floating hydrocarbons were still present on the groundwater
surface in monitoring well MW-5, although the thickness has been
decreasing since bi-weekly bailing was initiated
Frank's One Stop Quarterly Report — December 1999 Sampling
-3-
