07 February 1997 <br /> AGE-NC Project No 96-0266 <br /> ' Page 3 of 8 <br /> 32 SOIL LOGGING <br /> Soil was extruded from the remaining brass sleeves and screened for the presence of organic vapor <br /> using a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 0 eV, calibrated to <br /> ' isobutylene), and the readings were recorded on the Boring Logs The soil was described in <br /> accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System A typical soil piofile is depicted in <br /> ' Appendix A <br /> ' 3 3 GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION <br /> Grab ground water samples were collected from probe borings P1 and P3 through P15 using a <br /> ' Geoprobe water sampling assembly Probe rods were extended into ground water, then pulled back <br /> to expose a water sampler screen interval Ground water was allowed to enter the sampler, and <br /> samples were retrieved using a modified PVC tubing bailer <br /> ' After sample retrieval, the sampler was disassembled and cleaned between each sampling event <br /> P <br /> New PVC tubing vias used for each sample Samples were collected from selected borings in either <br /> 40-m1 EPA vials containing hydrochloric acid for sample preservation and 1-liter amber bottles or <br /> 500-m1 plastic bottles containing nitric acid for sample preservation The samples were placed in a <br /> chilled container and transported under chain-of-custody to MAI for analysis <br /> 1 - <br /> 1 ' <br /> ' 34 SHALLOW SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION, PLATING AREA <br /> On 25 November 1996, two soil samples (I-1 and I-2) were collected,from the southern edge of the <br /> ' plating shop (Building I) The soil samples were collected to determine if operations at the plating <br /> shop have adversely affected adjacent soil conditions Sample locations are depicted on Figure 2 <br /> ' The soil samples were collected from a depth of two feet bsg using a metric soil sampling hammer <br /> loaded with pre-cleaned brass sleeves Upon collection, the ends of the lead brass sleeve were <br /> covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape Each sample was labeled and placed in a <br /> tchilled container for subsequent transport to MAI under chain-of-custody <br /> ' 35 LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND GROUND WATER SAMPLES <br /> Selected soil and ground water samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified <br /> as gasoline and/or diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d),volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene <br /> and xylenes BTE&X), methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), cadmium, chromium, cyanide, lead, <br /> 1 <br />
