That individual is <br /> responsible for the safe and healthful performance of vork by his work force and subcontractors. <br /> During the subcontractor's activities on site,the safer representative will perform continuing work <br /> area inspections, and will conduct safety meetings an safety orientations for new employees. He <br /> will attend periodic safety meetings with the SSO. T1 e subcontractor's representative will also <br /> + investigate accidents and overexposure involving subcontractor's personnel <br /> i <br /> ,SOB HAZARD NALYSIS <br /> Physical hazards that may be encountered on site include those from chemical exposure, excavations, <br /> drill rig operations, cold-or heat stress, noise, underground and overhead utilities, on-site traffic, and <br /> equipment failures. These are discussed below. <br /> i <br /> Chemical Exposure <br /> Chemical hazards at UST removal sites include those associated with gasoline, diesel, and waste oil j <br /> constituents. Of these benzene, a carcinogen, is considered the greatest potential health risk. <br /> Principal routes of exposure are inhalation, absorption, skin and/or eye contact, and ingestion. <br /> Protective measures include respirators, safety glasses and face shields, disposable protective <br /> clothing, and disposable protective gloves. -Decontamination is by washing with soap and water. <br /> Excavation Hazards <br /> In general, soil sampling personnel do not enter UST xcavations because of the hazards of cave-in, <br /> concentration of toxic vapors, and oxygen deficiency. BSK employees required to enter an <br /> excavation must strictly follow the safe practices described below and all other applicable safety <br /> c rules and codes of safe practice: <br /> Do not enter an excavation over 5 feet deep unless it is shored or shielded. It can cave <br /> in on you. In the instance of an excavation in unfissured rock, entry may be permitted <br /> without shoring or shields if certified safe by a civil engineer. <br /> i <br /> Do not enter an excavation whose sides are undermined. It can cave in and bury you.
