i WORK
- + FORMER
' STATION
1 .0 INTRODUCTION
Y
This Site Assessment Work Plan has been prepared by Wayne Perry, Inc. (WPI) on behalf of
Equilon Enterprises LLC dba Shell Oil Products US (SHELL) in response to a letter from the San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, requesting submittal of a work plan to further
investigate the lateral and vertical extent of hydrocarbon-impacted soil and groundwater at the
former Shell Service Station (site) located at 1160 W. Yosemite avenue in Manteca, California. This
Work Pian has been prepared based on procedures identified in the `Tri-Regional Board, Staff
Recommendations for Preliminary Investigation and Evaluation of Underground Tank Sites', issued
August 10, 1990.
The background information, proposed scope of work, and planned schedule of implementation are
presented in this Work Plan.
t
2,0 BACKGROUND
y 2.1 Site Description
The site is currently a Payless Shoe Source with associated paved parking, located at the
' southeastern corner of Yosemite Avenue and Union Road in Manteca, California (Figure 1).
According to available records, four gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs), two 8,000-gallon
and two 5,000-gallon, and one 550-gallon waste oil UST were removed during a tank pull in 1983.
Approximate former locations of these USTs as well as associated product dispensers are located on
L Figure 2.
The surrounding land use appears to be mixed commercial and residential. Immediately east of the
L site is a mini-strip mall, which consists of a New York Pizza restaurant, Anna's Nails boutique, a
donut shop and a Smart Cuts barbershop (Figure 2).
2.2 Geologic and Hydrogeologic Settings
- The site is at an elevation of approximately 28 feet above mean sea level (msl) in the Central Valley
geographic province in San Joaquin County, California (Topo!, version 2.6.8, 2001). The region is a
large structural trough that has been partially filled by marine sediments and continental deposits.
The Sierra Nevada, which forms most of the eastern boundary of the valley, is the edge of a tilted
granitic block. The Coast Ranges, which form most of the western boundary, consist mainly of
+ folded and faulted marine rocks (USGS, 1995). The surface topography in the vicinity of the site
S
-- slopes gently to the west.
1160 W. Yosemite Avenue (at Union Road), Manteca, CA 1
