17 April 2003
AGE-NC Project No 97-0333
iPage 3 of 7
(blow counts) was recorded on boring logs by an AGE staff geologist, boring logs are in
Appendix B
Continuous soil sampling was performed at MW-8 from 40 to 80 feet bsg utilizing a stainless steel,
2-inch diameter by 5-foot long macro-core sampler The sampler was continuously driven in five-
foot increments by dropping a 140-pound weight from a height of 30 inches Boring logs are in
Appendix B
No sampling activities were performed at soil bonngs MW-7 and MW-9 through MW-13 due to
' severe heaving sands encountered during the construction of multi-level well MW-8 Instead, the
borings were advanced to total depth with a wood plug in the lead drilling bit and without any
sampling activities, upon reaching the total depth, tap water was deployed in the hollow stem augers
pnor to knocking out the wood plug as a counter measure to the upward heaving sand
' 2 2 SAMPLE LOGGING
Split-spoon soil samples collected from MW-8 between 15 and 40 feet bsg and between 80 and 165
' feet bsg were visually described on boring logs, between 40 and 80 feet bsg, each five-foot macro-
core soil sample section was sequentially placed on plastic sheeting and visually described on boring
' logs in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) Boring logs from MW-7
through MW-13 are included as Appendix B General lithology beneath the site is depicted in cross
sectional views GC', D-D' and F-F'on Figures 3, 4 and 5, respectively
2 3 EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
The hollow stem augers were steam cleaned prior to each bore hole advancement The macro-core
soil sampler,split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves used for sample collection were pre-washed with
' a solution of Alconox, and were rinsed with clean tap water prior to each sampling sequence
Rinseate generated from decontaminating the equipment was placed in properly labeled DOT-
approved model 17H 55-gallon drums and was stored on-site in an area lacking public access
2 4 MONITORING WELL COMPLETION
Soil borings MW-7 through and MW-13 were completed as ground water monitoring wells utilizing
1 7-inch diameter mute-level polyethylene well casing The inside of the multi-level well casing
' consisted of seven'/2-inch diameter teflon chambers Generally,AGE utilized six of the seven multi-
level chambers and installed screen intervals at depths between 30 and 35 feet bsg(First Zone), 60
' Advanced GeoEnveronmental,Inc
' i
