The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate
further the extent of soil and ground-water contamination
detected during removal of four underground gasoline storage
tanks from the site. The investigation included drilling three
soil borings, installing three ground-water monitoring wells, and
chemically analyzing selected soil and ground--water samples.
Q on February 11, 1988, Jim Thorpe oil, Inc. removed four
underground gasoline storage tanks and one waste-oil tank.
Canonie Environmental Services Corporation was onsite to collect
soil samples from beneath the tanks. According to Canonie
Environmental Services' Laboratory Report No. 85-052-3580, soil
samples were collected from approximate depths of 11 feet below
-: grade beneath the gasoline tanks and 7 feet below grade beneath
the waste--oil tank. Results of laboratory analyses performed by
Canonie Environmental Services indicated contamination in the
soil beneath the gasoline tanks at concentrations of total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) ranging from 5.1 to 10o parts per
million (ppm) . In an effort to remove the contamination, the
tank cavity was excavated further, and Canonie Environmental
Services collected a soil sample from approximately 18 feet below
grade. Results o>_ laboratory analyses of this soil sample
presented in Canonie Laboratory Report No. 85-052-3776 revealed
total volatile hydrocarbons at a concentration of 580 ppm and
total lead at a concentration of 29.5 ppm.
t1d
- -. -- --- ---on-October-24,--and_25,-19-88_,--ageologist from Applied GeoSystems
was present at the site to observe drilling and monitoring-well----
ear
