that the cone tank had a dark brown color ring on the bottom of the
tank. The cone tank has been used to treat plating wastewater and
may contain metal sludge which has been precipitated out solution.
There is a holding tank north of the cone tank that contains nickel
waste from the nickel spill that occurred in September 1996. The
holding tank is tank is full to the top rim. AMP has six 55-gallon
drums of nickel waste from the spill in front of the east side of
the holding tank. There is another three 55-gallon drums of nickel
waste on the north side of the holding tank.
AMP has a small holding tank for soap rinse just north of the
nickel waste holding tank. AMP plans to use the soap solution as
makeup water for the soap bath. The lift station for chromated
rinses is north of the soap tank. The lift station receives
plating wastewater which contain chromated wastes. The lift
station contained around 3-feet of wastewater.
AMP has two large rectangular tanks in the northwest corner next to
the pretreatment area. Both tanks are full of wastewater. Willie
told me that the western tank contained wastewater from zinc
plating operations and the east tank contains wastewater from the
floor cleanup.
AMP has a small tank and a 55-gallon drum for nickel stripping
operations around 9-feet east of the rectangular tanks along the
berm. The 55-gallon drum of nickel stripping solution is
positioned outside the berm in the walkway. MUD inspector, Toni
Duncan, took measurement of the level of liquid in the nickel strip
tanks.
Plating Area:
The floor in the plating area is covered with wastewater and
sludge. Willie told me that the plating floor had last been
cleaned six months ago. I estimate that the volume of waste with
in the plating shop bermed area to be around 1000-2000 gallons.
The floor is very messy and needs to be cleaned up. However, the
waste may be very difficult to treat because a variety of chemicals
have been spilled on the floor and may have mixed together forming
complexed or chelated metal waste.
The grating in front of the cleaner tanks, AMP tank numbers 1 and
49 is cover with a white chalky film and white/tan colored sludge
covers the floor around theses tanks. MUD inspector found the soap
rinse, AMP tank numbered 61, was empty. Willie inform me that the
tank had a leak on the bottom and had leaked out onto the floor.
I observe a white/tan sludge on the floor around tank 61.
The copper cyanide bath containment tray contained dark blue
5
