Pit Inspection October 20,2015
Synergy Health Proposal No.1133
Stockton,CA Page 2
suggests that the sulfuric acid has compromised the integrity of the concrete. Likewise, the east
wall of the pit in the vicinity of the acid mixing process is badly etched. The concrete is also
etched beneath a 4-inch drain line that is located on the north wall in the northwest corner of the
pit and beneath an 8-inch drain line located along the north wall in the northeast portion of the
pit.
I entered the Recycle Water Pit under confined space protocols at approximately 11:00 am. I
noted moderate etching of the concrete along the base of the sloping floor on the south side of
the pit, severe etching at the bottom of the west wall in the northwest corner of the pit and
moderate etching sloping floor in the northeast portion of the pit. There are vertical lines that are
spaced approximately every 4 feet along the interior of this pit. These lines may be from
plywood forms used during the concrete pour. In addition, the concrete around the 24" x 24"
manway cover in the northeast corner of the pit is severely eroded.
No obvious cracks and fractures were observed in the walls or the floor of either pit. It appears
the concrete etching in the Waste Water Pit is cause by the addition of concentrated sulfuric acid.
It is uncertain whether the etching of the concrete pits is providing a pathway for wash water to
impact subsurface soils and/or groundwater beneath the facility. However, concrete is not an
compatible material to construct a process tank in which concentrated acid is used for pH
adjustment. At a minimum, an epoxy coating that is non-reactive to concentrated acids should
be applied to form an impervious seal.
If you have any questions regarding this report or if there is additional information you require please
contact me at(925)478-8390.
Very truly yours,
EGLI
Cook Environmental Services,Inc.
