Biological treatment has certain inherent advantages. One
advantage is that the organic contaminants are destroyed, rather than transferred
from water to air. Likewise, treatment by adsorption onto granular activated
carbon (GAC) has certain other advantages, including a removal mechanism
which assures a high quality effluent under conditions of varying influent quality.
Combining these two treatment methods realizes the inherent benefits of each in
a process that is economical and produces no air emissions or hazardous waste.
1.2 Pu=
The primary objectives of this manual are to:
1) describe the GAC Fluid Bed process and equipment, and
r 2) define operating, troubleshooting and safety-related procedures.
1.3 &=
The scope of this manual is limited to operation of the equipment supplied by
Envirex, except where it is appropriate to provide information on operating the
GAC Fluid Bed in the context of a larger system, including the groundwater
supply system.
A written operator training program is not within the scope of this manual.
f
Page 1-1
