Conducting Weekly Inspections
Required by law, the Weekly Inspection helps ensure the station is always in compliance. The
inspection must be performed once each week by the SM or an ASM. Completed inspection
forms are kept for 5 years.

• Keep the Weekly Inspections (including blank forms) for the month on a clipboard at the
Accumulation Station. For details on how to get inspection forms, see the resources
section at the end of this guide.
• As part of the inspection, totes must be opened and spot-checked for proper classification.
Any waste found in the wrong tote must be moved to the correct tote.
• If any exceptions are found during the inspection, they must be documented on the form
and corrected immediately
• Weekly Inspections must be signed and dated by the person conducting the inspection.
Completed forms must be kept in the Haz Waste binder (Family Dollar) or Weekly
Inspection file (Dollar Tree).
• The completed Weekly Inspection forms will be reviewed by any agency regulators who
come into your store for a hazardous waste/hazardous materials inspection. It is important
that they are completed accurately and on-time.
Safely Managing Helium
Helium is a colorless, odorless compressed gas that we use to fill balloons. Posted on either the
tank or above the tank are instructions for securing and moving tanks, and filling balloons. You
must follow these instructions, and those listed below, at all times.
• Associates must be properly trained before handling helium.
• Be sure to review the Safety Data Sheet for helium. (It should be posted at the balloon
station and helium storage area.)
• Do not allow anyone to inhale helium from the filling equipment or from balloons.
o Suffocation can take place by reducing the concentration of oxygen in the air.
o Inhaling directly from the filling equipment can also cause serious lung damage.
• Do not leave a tank unattended and accessible. Tanks must be secured in the balloon
station and chained while in the back room. The chain must rest securely from one-third to
one-half the way down the tank.
• Never block tanks in the back room with u-boats, fixtures, freight or other items –
they must be accessible for us, first responders, and the regulatory agencies.

Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide 10 April 2019, ver 1.0
