Correctly Using Absorbent (or kitty litter)
When processing waste, add absorbent to a bag only when there’s liquid to absorb. Do not add
absorbent if the item is not leaking.

Never add absorbent or litter to a dry or solid product such as bar soap, powdered detergent,
or electronics. To stop a leak when processing a damaged product:
• Check that the cap or lid is tight.
• If the cap/lid is missing, wrap packing tape around the
very top of the container only.
• Place packing tape over a cut in a container or product.

Bagging Leakers with Absorbent or Kitty Litter
1. Place the waste item in an upright position in a self-sealing plastic bag. Use a bag large
enough to accommodate both the item and the absorbent.
2. Add absorbent to the bag to absorb free liquid. Let the bag sit for a few minutes.
3. If the absorbent is completely saturated, add a little more. When you can see a layer of dry
absorbent along the top of the absorbent, the amount should be sufficient.
4. Always double-bag leaking product.
5. Place the double-bagged item in an upright position,
in the appropriate tote.

Hazardous Waste Quick Reference Guide 7 April 2019, ver 1.0
