BioRtration Process
food inside the body. To maintain the dieting process the person must
breathe. To take the process one step further, suppose the person is fasting,
then begins to starve. Although this person is dying of starvation they still
5 require oxygen to keep starving. The organisms do this to where only the cell
wall remains, thus reducing the amount of solids by as much as 40%.
The Aerobic Digester is a large tank that receives only WS (Waste Sludge).
On a batch type procedure, WS undergoes aerobic digestion. Aeration is
required to maintain sufficient oxygen to keep the organism aerobic. The
procedure has three phases:
Aeration
Sedimentation
Decant.
Aeration is when the digester is full and aerating and when most of aerobic
digestion occurs. After sufficient time has elapsed, the air is turned off.
Then the process enters the sedimentation phase. Sedimentation is the
process of settling the sludge. When this happens, sludge settles to the
bottom of the tank leaving clear water on top of the tank. Now the process is
ready for decant. Decant is where clear water is removed by a pump and then
the process repeats itself. This process is illustrated in Figure 3.
Figure 3
Aeration Sedimentation Decant
7H Technical Services Group Operation &Maintenance Manual
BioFiltration Process Page 11 of 26
Rev99121b
