(6) Airborne TWA established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and published in the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, 1990 edition Physical Hazards On-site nonchemical hazards are safety hazards associated with heavy equipment including the drill ng, heat stress, noise, possible traffic, and possible electrical hazards. All field personnel must be aware of drilling activities and general traffic at all times. Drilling During drilling acitivities, physical hazards will include heavy equipment use, and possible noise hazards. All personnel should be aware of moving heavy equipment at all times. Personnel should avoid crossing in the path of heavy equipment and be sure the oeprator is aware of personnel before they approach the equipment. The work zone is to be clearly marked using cones or caution tape. BC standard operating procedures for boerehole drilling, including hand augernng the first five of the borehole, are to be followed at all times. Traffic Since a majority of BC's drilling projects are conducted m parking lots and public right-of-ways, automobile traffic is of concern. While working in areas where traffic is moderate or heavy, BC personnel shall: wear an orange safety vest (shuts or jackets acceptable) at all times; have the work zone clearly delineated using traffic cones, barricades, caution tape, and/or men working signs; and have on-site and available, a written traffic safety plan approved by the corporate health and safety officer. Additional traffic control measures may be set forth in an encroachment permit. If an encroachment permit is required, the permit shall be on-site and accessible at all times Noise Noise is a potential hazard in areas where heavy equipment including drill ngs, power tools, pumps or generators are operated Heavy equipment operation may produce noise levels that reach or exceed 85 decibels (dBA), the action level established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Elevated noise levels will be evaluated by the SSO when the drill ng is operated. Exposure to elevated noise levels can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss, and can also cause muscle tension and irritability. The SSO will ensure hearing protection is utilized when noise levels are elevated, e.g., when the drill ng is m operation.
