3 3 Soil Vapor Extraction System Design
Soil vapor will be extracted from one primary zone at the site This zone comprises unsaturated soil
extending from approximately 6 to 15 feet bgs, vapor extraction wells W-1, W-2 and W-4 are
' screened through this interval To adequately address the treatment of soil from 6 feet bgs to the
ground surface, slotted PVC piping will be placed horizontally in the bottom of the vapor extraction
' piping trench if the hydrocarbon impacted soil is encountered
' The results of the VET conducted by Canome did not specify an estimated radius of influence
However, remediation sites in the Central Valley with simular lithologies have shown pneumatic
' properties which are favorable for soil vapor extraction and have influenced distances of 30 feet or
greater A thorough evaluation of the ability of the vapor extraction system to treat the entire
Izone of hydrocarbon impacted soil will be performed during the initial start-up and testing of the
' system Additional vapor extraction points will be installed if required
34 Emission Control System
Based on the analytical results from the soil VET, an internal combustion (IC) engine will be
' appropriate to extract and abate hydrocarbon-bearing vapors from the subsurface The expected
destruction efficiency for the IC engine will be approximately 95% A vapor extraction flow
' diagram is shown on Figure 7
' The IC engine will be used to extract and abate hydrocarbon-bearing vapor recovered from three
vapor extraction wells and the vapor extraction trench piping The IC engine is capable of
' effectively treating up to 150 cfm of soil vapor from the extraction wells The IC engine is equipped
with a supplemental fuel management system which automatically controls the quantity of
' supplemental fuel (propane) supplied to the engine The supplemental fuel will be stored in a 499
gallon approved tank outside the remediation compound Influent and effluent hydrocarbon vapor
' samples, process temperature, and effluent temperature will all be measured as required for permit
compliance and to ensure reliable operation of the system
' TOC1/34 HRP L O 4FACA
NOoos-oo21i A,@—26 1994
