SKS reports that 39,000 chickens
are in each house. The dirt floor below the chicken cages contained a mixture of chicken manure, feed and
water. No adult flies were observed in the houses.
Chicken houses four and five were not in use but still contained chicken cages. The dirt floor below the
chicken cages was scraped clean in house four. A crew was removing all chicken manure from below the
cages in house five. No adult flies were observed in the houses.
The concrete pit used to store chicken manure next to house five contained water and no evidence of fly
breeding was found. The concrete pit used to store chicken manure next to house four was dry and no
evidence of fly breeding was found.
Chicken house six was in use and full of laying hens. SKS reports that 90,000 chickens are in this house.
Water was being used during the inspection to flush the manure to a sump at the west end of the house.
No adult flies were observed in the house.
The open manure pit, behind the Honen 9 (bunker)building, is used to store manure generated by houses
1-6. Most of the hard manure crust, seen during the June 13, 2006 inspection, had been removed from the
pit. The pit was approximately five feet deep with a layer of moist manure floating on top of the liquid.
Very few adult flies were seen near the pit. The facility plans to prevent fly breeding in the pit by
operating three floating agitators to keep the liquid in motion.
The hard manure crust, removed from the manure pit, was spread on the dry pad area east of the Honen 9
(bunker)building. Application of manure to land in this manner is a violation of the Rules and
Regulations Pertaining to San Joaquin County Ordinance 877, §6A(2). Application of manure to land
requires approval by the EHD. Before using the dry pad, submit in writing to the EHD the following
details: when the manure will be spread on the dry pad, how much manure will be spread in cubic yards,
