Wastewater Characteristics
The domestic wastewater generated from the facility will be composed of blackwater from toilets
and greywater from hand washing. There will be no high organic loading from break room use,
etc. Additional wastewater constituents may consist of other liquids to the system, such as coffee,
juices, low strength cleaning liquids, etc.
No wastewater generated from the on-site winery laboratory is introduced into the OWTS. Any
laboratory waste is classified as winery waste and managed under the aforementioned Waste
Discharge Requirements (WDRs). It is imperative that low strength and low volumes of cleaners
are used in the restroom since they can disrupt septic tank biology.
To utilize accurate nitrogen concentrations in the nitrate loading calculations, on June 26, 2020, a
septic tank sample was retrieved from the second compartment of the 2,000 gallon tank which
serves the majority of winery employees and is located south of the tank farms, adjacent to the
existing propane tank. The septic tank was sampled simultaneous with the sampling of the
domestic water well and was therefore included in the Laboratory Report from FGL Laboratories.
The test results, found on Page 5 in Appendix F, were immediately determined to be suspect due to
results of extremely high ammonia nitrogen and organic nitrogen concentrations. In addition, the
ammonia nitrogen and organic nitrogen concentrations were too similar to be accurate. Typically,
organic nitrogen concentrations in septic tank effluent are 25%to 33% of the Total Kjeldahl
Nitrogen (TKN) concentrations.
Consequently, it was decided to resample the septic tank effluent and take the sample to another
Laboratory. Located in Appendix G, are the resample septic tank effluent test results from A&L
Laboratories in Modesto. As noted, the ammonia nitrogen is comparatively high at 193 mg/L, with
the organic nitrogen fraction at a significantly lower 30 mg/L. These test results from A&L
Laboratories will be used in the Nitrate Loading calculations on Page 8.
