3.0 SCOPE OF WORK
The evaluation of mercury in soil and groundwater near the Pool B-1 Separator at the
Galli Pad area will consist of the following tasks:
• Task 1 - Preparation of Permits, a Work Plan, a Health and Safety Plan, and
Underground Utility Clearance;
• Task 2 - Soil Sample Collection and Analysis;
• Task 3 - Groundwater Sample Collection and Analysis; and
• Task 4 - Report Preparation.
Each of these tasks is described in more detail below.
3.1 TASK 1 - PREPARATION OF PERMITS, WORK PLAN, HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN,
AND UNDERGROUND UTILITY CLEARANCE
This task consists of the procurement of applicable site assessment permits from the
SJCEHD. Additional SJCEHD Joaquin County requirements include preparation and submittal
of this Work Plan and Health and Safety Plan (Appendix A). Prior to mobilization, each soil
boring location will be clearly marked and a utility clearance obtained through Underground
Service Alert and/or Unocal.
3.2 TASK 2 - SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Task 2 consists of soil sample collection, laboratory chemical analysis, and physical
testing. In order to evaluate the concentration and transport of mercury in soil, samples will be
collected from surface and shallow subsurface soils in two areas where mercury was previously
reported (Figure 3). Soil sampling activities will consist of the collection and analysis of three
types of soil samples; composite soil samples of surface and shallow subsurface materials,
discrete samples for leachability testing, and a bulk sample for physical testing. Soil sampling
procedures and protocols are described in Section 4.0. Soil sampling activities are outlined
below.
• Collect surface and shallow subsurface composite soil samples, from the two
areas suspected to contain elevated levels of mercury in soil and to assess
potential vertical migration of surface impacts. In each area, a total of three soil
SAC 187.14 2
DAMES & MOORE
